On the trail

Central Oregon is the candy store, the mother lode, the crème de la crème, for all biking and hiking enthusiasts. Test your skills and endurance on a wide variety of some of the most spectacular road and off-road rides this country has to offer.  Only steps from the resort, one can find the rolling white water of the Deschutes River with miles of hiking and mountain bike trails along its banks. Or take the Cascade Lakes Highway, the gateway to hundreds of pristine wilderness trails and lakes.


Wanderlust Tours Guided Cave, Volcano & Desert GPS Tours.  Experience remote caves in helmets and headlamps, explore the crater of an ancient volcano or discover hidden clues in the desert on a GPS Eco-Challenge.  Local naturalist guides bring the area alive for you!  No experience necessary-all ages and ability levels welcome.  All equipment, plus transportation included - trips leave daily at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Reservations required.  1-800-962-2862.

Horseback Riding. A variety of horseback rides for the entire family (6 yrs. and up) and all skill levels.

Mt. Bachelor Sightseeing. From July 1st through Labor Day, ride the Pine Marten Express lift up the mountain and enjoy spectacular views and mountain air. Lunch is served at Sunrise Lodge and dinner in the Pine Marten Lodge on Friday and Saturday evenings. 800-829-2442.  Details.

Rock Climbing. Within 30 minutes of the resort is Smith Rock State Park. It anchors a roster of top flight climbing sites that attract die-hard sport climbers from all over the world. The close access to the base of these hikes also allows for a great vantage point for climbers at heart who just want to watch.
