Enjoy Elk Lake Near Mt Bachelor and Bend, Oregon

Elk Lake is a high-elevation lake in the Deschutes National Forest, located about 32 miles southwest of Bend and along the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. With 405 acres of water surface, 5.1 kilometers of shoreline, and an elevation of 3,000 feet above sea level, it’s a well-known and popular destination for swimming, fishing, boating, windsurfing, hiking, and camping. The lake is open all year, but weather conditions may make it inaccessible between November and late May.

The lake is the most popular and heavily used among other Cascade Lakes and reservoirs. There are three day-use areas, four campgrounds, a resort, boat ramps, and hiking trails around the lake.

Elk Lake is a great place to enjoy the outdoors and experience all that Central Oregon has to offer, so we’ve compiled a list of things to do at Elk Lake to make sure you’re getting the most of your visit.

Enjoy the Beach Picnic Area

The beach/picnic area is located on the shores of Elk Lake, and has stunning views of South Sister. During the summer months, it is a popular location to enjoy a sandy beach (that’s right! – we said “sandy beach” 😊), swim, and picnic.

The beach is open from late May to mid-September, weather and conditions permitting.

Fishing at Elk Lake

Elk Lake is stocked with Kokanee and Brook Trout. A valid Oregon fishing license is required for all anglers 16 years of age and older. You can purchase a license online, at any Oregon license agent or at an ODFW office.

The best time to fish is usually early in the season or late in the fall when the water temperatures are cooler. Check the stocking reports for recent stocking information.

Visit the Elk Lake Guard Station

The historic guard station known as Elk Lake Guard Station is located near Elk Lake. The guard station, which served as a base for a forest guard, was built in 1929. It is now a visitor information center where you can learn about the life and work of the last century’s forest guard.

Go Hiking

From Elk Lake, you can access Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), which connects you to various trails and lakes throughout the Cascade Range. Hosmer, Sparks, Blow, Doris, Devils, Todd, Cultus, Lava, and Little Lava Lakes are all near Elk Lake, making hiking in this area interesting and fun. In fact, the PCT is America’s second-longest trail, running from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon, and Washington states. So, needless to say, there is a lot of hiking fun to be had when we’re talking about the PCT.

Hit the Lake with Meredith Lodging!

Visit Bend, Oregon in The Fall!

Fall in Bend is a season filled with changing color, cooling temps, sunny skies and golden light. Surprisingly warm days (often in the high 60s or even low 70’s)  and crisp nights make it a great time to enjoy all that Bend has to offer. Mt. Bachelor Village, just above the Deschutes River and tucked in amidst evergreen fir trees, pinecone-laden pines and Aspens that turn bright yellow each Fall, is even more beautiful than usual this time of year and makes the perfect home base to experience the season in Central Oregon. We gathered our Guests’ top favorite ways to savor Fall on -property (or very nearby!) when staying at Mt. Bachelor Village.

Book a River Ridge Home, and spend as much time as possible on your deck facing the Deschutes River.

Once you check-in to these River-facing, light filled homes, you will not want to leave! Perched just above the Deschutes you can watch the Fall Color Show play out for miles and see trees of every color! Sunrise is spectacular, with the cool air seeming to make the colors even brighter. And the evening light changing the skies every few minutes is better than any movie you could watch inside your cozy home.

Walk the Deschutes River Trail and see Fall up close.

Let nature be your guide to exploring Fall at Mt. Bachelor Village. Right outside your door you can access the beautiful Deschutes River trail and see and hear the rushing of the River, the changing of the maple and Aspen trees and all that golden light across the landscape. This trail is suitable for hikers of all experience levels and family-friendly, too.

Want to see even more Fall Color? Head to Nearby Drake Park!

Drake Park is a local favorite with good reason, it’s beautiful and offers something for everyone. In the Fall, the park is also one of the best places to see the Fall color show because of the vast variety of trees that were planted there when the park was built.  The park features a half mile of riverfront, acres of open green space, charming views over Mirror Pond and picnic tables for visitors to enjoy.

Sunny Day? Cruiser bikes! Surprise Snowfall? Snow shoes! Mt. Bachelor Village offers complimentary rentals to Meredith Lodging Guests no matter what the season!

We know that our Guests love to get out there and see and experience all that Bend has to offer and we want to make that fun and easy and FREE to Meredith Lodging Guests no matter what the weather. We have cruiser bikes for the whole family and snow shoes and poles, too. And if you are lucky enough to be at MBV when the snow falls, check with our front desk about sleds and snowman building kits! And if some group game time sounds fun and the weather permits, we even have corn hole sets available for Meredith Lodging Guests to enjoy. No matter what the weather we love helping you make memories at Mt. Bachelor Village.

Spend some time around the new outdoor fire pit with friends and family.

Meredith Lodging spent the summer making upgrades and Mt. Bachelor Village Guests are putting our our new outdoor fire pit at the top of their favorites list! This cozy outdoor gathering spot is even seeing some daytime use by folks wanting to work on their laptops outside. Grab your s’mores supplies and come to the fire pit to enjoy the warm glow amidst the beauty of Mt. Bachelor Village!

When the temperatures drop head inside and enjoy our remodeled lobby and Meredith Lodging Guest Lounge and Game Room!

Need a place to tuck in to when the weather is cooler? Like to start your morning with a hot cup of coffee from local favorite Backporch Roasters? Kids need to get the wiggles out and you want to read a book? Look no further than the newly revamped Mt. Bachelor Village Lobby and Meredith Lodging Guest Lounge and Game room! From free morning coffee to cozy evenings spent by the indoor lodge-style fireplace while the kids play shuffle board, foosball, video games or board games nearby…we have your entertainment and cozy-lounging needs covered!

Best Baked Goods in Bend

Best Baked Goods in Bend

Best Baked Goods in Bend

Mt. Bachelor Village vacation rentals offer so much adventure right outside your door! The Deschutes River Trail, SUP-ing in the Old Mill District, and miles of bike paths invite all of us to get “outdoorsy.” Have a foodie in your group? Mt. Bachelor Village is also well located to take advantage of Bend’s many great places to eat, including the town’s best bakeries! Get ready to inhale that fresh desert mountain air mixed with the smell of butter, sugar, and freshly baked dough! Bend’s bakery scene is on the rise, and these spots are worth the visit … and the calories!

The Sparrow Bakery

With two locations, this bakery has quickly become a favorite amongst locals and visitors. No stop in Bend is complete without trying their Ocean Roll, a hand folded croissant filled with freshly ground cardamom, vanilla, and sugar. We also love their banana bread, and savory and sweet croissant selections.

Nancy P’s Café & Bakery

Locals know this is the place to fuel up before heading to the slopes. Start your morning off right with a specialty coffee, and one of their famous savory pastry pockets filled with eggs, cheese, veggies, and your choice of ham, bacon, or veggies. Vacationing with your pup? Order a barkscotti treat too, and the whole family can enjoy their pastry (or full breakfast) from the dog-friendly garden patio.

Village Baker

There is nothing better than freshly baked bread and butter! Stop by the Village Baker to pick up some fresh bread to enjoy alongside some home cooked meals prepared in your cozy Meredith Lodging rental. They offer an amazing selection of rustic, Old World breads, and some loaves with a twist, like traditional European-style country sourdough, walnut and raisin, Bavarian-style black butte porter, or cinnamon swirl brioche bread, perfect for French toast! They also serve decadent pastries, like their coveted cardamom brioche – dipped in honey butter and rolled in cardamom spice and brown sugar before baking.

Too Sweet Cakes

We could not agree more with the Too Sweet Cakes motto that life is too short to not be sweet! Choose from croissant donuts, cinnamon rolls, doughnut holes, savory and sweet scones and croissants, and so much more! We recommend trying their toaster pastry, think a grown-up version of a Poptart – a blackberry raspberry pastry filled with vanilla bean glaze with cinnamon crunch pieces.

Ready to discover some of the best baked goods in Bend, alongside some of the best scenery and outdoor recreation available on the West Coast?

Meredith Lodging has you covered with a wide selection of Mt. Bachelor vacation rentals to suit all your needs and budget. You can view our entire Mt. Bachelor Village Collection online (including our Bend lodging options), or call our Reservations Team at (888) 752-2220. We hope to see you soon!
