River Trail

Top 5 Family-Friendly Hikes When Staying at Mt. Bachelor Village Resort by Meredith Lodging

A stay at Mt. Bachelor Village Resort by Meredith Lodging puts you in prime location to explore nearby family-friendly hikes, where the whole family can enjoy the stunning sights of Central Oregon – the Deschutes River, the Cascade Mountains, towering ponderosa pines, and local wildlife.

Ready to explore the breathtaking scenery, endless outdoor activities, and exclusive amenities for our guests? Book a stay at Mt. Bachelor Village Resort by Meredith Lodging for a memorable family getaway!

Find an Oregon Vacation Rental to Match Your Activities

While searching around for things to do in Oregon, you can sometimes lose sight of why you want to visit in the first place. With that in mind, it’s crucial to find somewhere that satisfies your needs. For example, if you wish to indulge in some retail therapy, you’ll probably want a vacation rental near Bend, where you’ll find several well-known retailers. Or, if you’re going to try surfing, beachcombing, or ocean fishing, you’ll want to post up somewhere like Newport, Lincoln City, or Cannon Beach.

Here are our top 5 family-friendly hikes in Bend:

Deschutes River Trail.

This 3-mile, family-friendly trail can be accessed directly from Mt. Bachelor Village resort – it runs right through the property! Enjoy the convenience and beauty of this favorite trail for locals and visitors alike. Certain parts of the trail allow dogs, but we recommend verifying before heading out with your favorite four-legged friend!

Pilot Butte.

The Butte is in the center of Bend and is open year-round. This trail is roughly 1.5 miles in and out and will reward you with stunning views of the Cascades and high desert vistas. During the summer, you can also drive to the top of Pilot Butte for a 360-degree view of Bend!

Tumalo Falls.

No trip to Bend is complete without a hike on this iconic trail. In the winter, you can snowshoe 2.5 miles from the parking area to view the stunning falls, or in warmer months, park closer to the falls. There is a $5/vehicle/day recreation fee site – passes are available onsite, or you can purchase online here.

Todd Lake.

This popular trail is suitable for all ages. The 1.5-mile loop takes you around the lake with only a slight elevation gain. The trail is only open during the summer months but will spoil you with beautiful views of mountains and wildflowers. If you are lucky, you may see hundreds of baby frogs that hatch here in early summer.

Benham Falls.

Spend an afternoon hiking amongst old growth ponderosa pine along the Deschutes River. There are a few waterfalls along the trail – perfect for that family photo, as well as several picnic areas, great for a resting area and a snack to fuel up as you continue exploring the beauty of Bend. Leashed pups allowed.

Snowshoes Central Oregon

Best Outdoor Winter Activities Near Mt. Bachelor Village Resort in Bend

It is no surprise locals and visitors alike head to Central Oregon for winter fun! Mt Bachelor Village Resort by Meredith Lodging has an impressive collection of Central Oregon vacation rentals to suit every group and budget. From cozy cabins to golf course estates.

However you like to stay and play in the snow, here is a guide to some of the best outdoor winter activities in Central Oregon:

Skiing.

Experience world-class skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, dog sledding, and much more at Mt. Bachelor, Oregon’s premier ski resort. Hoodoo Ski area also offers more than 800 skiable acres, as well as Central Oregon’s only night skiing.

Sledding.

Wanoga Snow Play Area Sno-Park is the perfect spot for the whole family – pups included – to slide into a fun filled day of sledding and tubing! Pack a thermos of hot chocolate to enjoy while you warm up in their large warming hut.

Hiking.

Smith Rock State Park – Enjoy scenic views of snow-covered canyons, miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, and sightings of local wildlife (golden eagles, deer, river otter and beaver, and falcons) in this stunning state park. Leashed dogs allowed.

Explore local hot springs.

Paulina Lake Hot Springs – Come explore these hidden hot springs dotted along the shores of Paulina Lake Beach. In order to reach the hot springs, you will need to hike along the shore for 1.25 miles. The hike is flat and appropriate for all fitness levels and offers stunning views along the way.

Spelunking.

Tucked away in the high desert of Central Oregon hides hundreds of lava tubes formed from Oregon’s volcanic past. Sawyer Cave is a hidden gem. If you choose to visit, you will likely have the cave to yourself. We recommend parking at the Little Nash Sno-Park, following the edge of the forest to get to the cave.

Explore local caves.

Boyd Cave is one of the largest and best-preserved caves in the region. Its accessibility and location make it one of the most popular caves to explore. Bring a flashlight and dress warm, as temperatures drop dramatically inside the cave. Hidden Forest Cave is unique and magical to explore because it is both a lava tube and a 500-foot long, 40-foot-deep depression where the cave’s ceiling collapsed. The cave is easily accessible and open all year long.

Hike to local falls.

Benham Falls Hike – The whole family will enjoy this 1.5 mile, out and back trail that features a waterfall and majestic old growth ponderosa pines. The trail is accessible year-round, and leashed dogs are allowed.

Ice Staking.

For a classic winter holiday experience, hit the rinks at The Village at Sunriver or Seventh Mountain Resort with the whole family. Enjoy music, light displays and the sound of laughter from kids of all ages, as you glide over the ice.

Try Snow/Fat Biking.

Plow over snow with ease while you enjoy the rising popularity of fat bikes, mountain bikes with 4.5-inch-wide tires. Crow’s Feet and Pine Mountain Sports are two local outfitters that rent fat bikes.

Snowshoeing.

Central Oregon boasts tons of amazing spots to snowshoe, and plenty of them are pup-friendly too! Wanoga Sno-Park offers a short, easy 1-mile loop. Perfect for first timers and pups. The friendly team at Powder House can help get you and your whole family geared up for a memorable snow day. Please note, Sno-Parks require a permit for usage between November 1st and April 30th.

Go with a guide!

Prefer a guided experience? Wanderlust Tours offers a wide variety of winter experiences to choose from, and Crater Lake National Park offers a free ranger-led tour.

Top Tips for A Bend, Oregon Snowshoeing Adventure

Fun with Friends in Winter

Looking for the perfect wintertime activity for the whole family? Bend, Oregon offers excellent snowshoeing opportunities for all levels! Come explore Central Oregon’s winter wonderland, and book a getaway at Mt. Bachelor Village Resort by Meredith Lodging.

Located just down the hill from Mt. Bachelor, and nestled amongst towering pines and aspens, Mt. Guests can choose from cozy ski cabins, to more luxurious, larger homes, all whilst enjoying a wide array of exclusive on-site amenities.

There are endless opportunities for exploring the snow-covered Cascades on snowshoes, and remember Sno-Parks require a permit for usage between November 1st and April 30th. Here are a few of our family-friendly favorites:

Skyline Sno-Park.

Located just 10 minutes from downtown Bend, this sno-park is one of the closest places to snowshoe. This sno-park provides a small network of Nordic trails rated easy to moderate, perfect for cross-country skiers and snowshoers looking for 1-2 hours of wintery fun. Dog-friendly!

Tumalo Falls.

These majestic Falls are not only a must-visit during the summer, but also an impressive site in the winter. During the winter months, you can follow the snow-covered road just after the bridge crossing for a mostly flat 5.2 mile out and back trek. Pups allowed.

Wanoga Sno-Park.

This dog-friendly, winter playground offers plenty of options for snow-filled fun – sledding, tubing, snowmobiling, Nordic skiing, fat biking, and snowshoeing. The Wanoga snowshoe trails is perfect for families and beginners, as there is a 1-mile groomed snowshoe trail leaving right from the parking area.

Try a guided tour.

First-time snowshoe-ers might want to start out with a guided tour. A few of our favorite outfitters include Mt. Hood Meadows, Wanderlust Tours, and a free ranger-led snowshoe walk at Crater Lake National Park.

Warm up after a long day on the snowy trails. We love an Après-snowshoe steaming cup of coffee or hot chocolate for the kids at Thump or Lone Pine. Looking for something stronger? Head to The Stihl Whiskey Bar, or open a bottle of wine and warm up by the firepit back at the Resort.

Ready to explore the wide-open beauty of Central Oregon? Mt Bachelor Village Resort by Meredith Lodging offers something for everyone. Exploring The Newberry Caldera

Central Oregon holds a lot of amazing and beautiful recreation locations, but one that is often overlooked is the Newberry Caldera Recreational Park just south of Sunriver. The Newberry Caldera is actually the largest volcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc, and is about the size of Rhode Island. When it erupted 1,300 years ago, it created two lakes within its crater: Elk and Paulina Lake. This makes a perfect day trip that shouldn’t involve the crowds you would see at Crater Lake.

On a nice hot day, Paulina and Elk lakes are favorites for locals to find some relief from the heat. These lakes are very easily accessible for fishing, paddle boarding, kayaking, or any non-motorized watercraft you want! If you do not have your own gear with you, that’s not a problem! Elk Lake offers day rentals of recreational watercraft to enjoy with your family.

The caldera also has a number of hiking options for all levels:

❖  Big Obsidian Flow trail: It’s a short hike, roughly a mile and a half, and very beginner friendly, but you’ll see amazing quantities of obsidian all around the trails. Please do not remove any obsidian. Also, this is not a good trail for your dog, as the obsidian will cut their paws.

❖  Paulina Falls: This beautiful waterfall is easily accessible to all, and particularly impressive in the spring with higher water levels.

❖  Paulina Peak: This is an expert-level trail, about 4 miles round-trip. About a mile up the trail, you will follow the cliffline (keeping a good, healthy distance from the cliff), which allows you to watch the views get better as you reach the top. It is short and steep, so make sure to pack plenty of water! You can also drive to Paulina Peak if the hike is too much.

❖  Other hikes circumnavigate Paulina Lake (about 7 miles), and a 27-mile crater rim hikewhich is more popular among mountain bikers. There are no water options on the Rim Trail, so make sure to pack in plenty of water.

Each of the lakes has access to hot springs! The Paulina Lake Hot Springs are a mile-and-a-half hike in; Elk Lake Hot Springs are closer to a quarter mile. These are the closest hot spring options for Central Oregon.

One last thing I’d like to note is that this park closes for the winter. However, you can still access different trailheads along the road leading to the park for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or snowmobiling! Make sure to do additional research on those trails and observe safety information for winter activities.

Please make sure to respect the trails, and Leave No Trace to help conserve this area for others who come after you. Regardless of why you might choose to come out to play in this amazing spot in Oregon, you are guaranteed to find adventure!

Best Breweries in Bend Oregon – Our Top Bend Brewery Recommendations

Bend is well known for its Beer Culture. The famous Bend Ale Trail put on by Visit Bend takes you to 18 breweries that meet certain guidelines, but there are at least 18 other breweries alongside the Ale Trail! If you’re new to Bend, here are a few breweries I recommend you visit, though of course almost everyone in Bend can advise you about their personal favorites!

Crux Fermentation Project

I almost always recommend Crux to anyone new to Bend because of the wide variety of flavorful beers they serve–you’re likely to find one you like. Even the food is good! The Grilled Cheesy at Crux is pretty famous among locals. Come by for Sunset Hour, when you can drink a beer, let your dog relax on the lawn, enjoy a snack from the summer food carts, and watch the sunset on the Cascades. In winter, you’ll enjoy the large fireplace and classy interior.

Ale Apothecary

Ale Apothecary is incredibly unique in the way that they brew their beers. I recently tried a beer that was brewed in a pine barrel, giving it a flavor unlike any beer I’d ever tried, and I mean that in a good way! Their dedicated staff knows how each beer is made and it is incredibly clear how much passion everyone there has for craft beer. Stop by to experience a whole new depth to your beer!

Deschutes Brewery

It goes without saying that Deschutes is a Bend and Oregon classic as far as breweries go, and therefore deserves to be recommended every time. They’ve been perfecting their beers for a long time and continue to make improvements. Their public house downtown provides a nice setting, and the food is always amazing if you are looking for a fancy dinner. Their Brew House off of Colorado offers tours of the brewery if you wanted to know more about the in’s and out’s of beer making!

Ten Barrel Brewery

Ten Barrel is on this list not just for its beer, but for its amazing variety of sours! If you are with a beer lover yet you are more into sours, then Ten Barrel would be the perfect compromise. Each one of their sours are incredibly unique. You may have seen their sours, such as their cucumber sour, in the grocery stores, but you’ll find more exciting flavors at their brew house. At one point they had a rose petal sour, which had a beautiful floral taste paired with a rose aroma!

Avid Cider

If you are looking for something lighter than a beer and love cider, look no further! Avid cidery has a wide range of options for you to try. Their fireplaces and fun atmosphere make this a great place for hanging out!

Boneyard Brewery

I believe Boneyard needs to be on this list because of their RPM IPA, which can be found at almost any bar in town! In general Boneyard rocks the IPA scene in town, so if you are a fan then Boneyard is definitely worth a visit.

Come Experience Bend For Yourself!

Bend, Oregon is a hidden gem located in the Pacific Northwest. This beautiful town is nestled between the Cascade Mountains and the Deschutes River and is known for its amazing outdoor recreation, microbreweries, and charming old-west feel.

Whether you are looking to hit the slopes at Mount Bachelor, mountain bike through the Deschutes National Forest, fish for trout on the Deschutes River, or simply enjoy a pint of beer at one of Bend’s many breweries, there is something for everyone in Bend.

Bend Lodging by Mt Bachelor Village Resort offers a variety of vacation rental homes to fit any need or budget. We have cozy ski cabin condos nestled in the woods, perfect for a romantic getaway or a family ski trip.

Ski And Stay in Bend at Mt. Bachelor Village by Meredith Lodging

It’s getting to be that time of year again in Central Oregon! As the mountain peaks start turning white with snow, this ski town wakes up each morning with anticipation. Winter is coming! If you are not from this area and you are a skier or boarder, then experiencing Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort is a must!

Calling All Skiers and Snowboarders!

Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort is fantastic for alpine skiing or snowboarding–it’s the most popular ski resort in the Pacific Northwest! Two things make this a unique ski resort: The first is that Mt Bachelor is still considered an active volcano! But don’t worry, it’s been 9,500 years since its last eruption. The second is when the weather is mellow, you can take Summit chair to the top of the mountain to open up 360 degree skiing! In the right snow conditions you can access terrain on the backside of the mountain for added challenge. The backside is a traverse with different chutes to drop in to, winding your way to a cat track that brings you back to one of the two lifts on either end, Cloudchaser (eastside) and Northwest (westside). Personally, I recommend all-mountain or powder skis for this area. I’ve done it in groomer skis and they added quite a bit of difficulty. Please note that the access on the back of the mountain is as close as you can get to backcountry terrain, and should only be explored by expert skiers and snowboarders.

The resort offers 16 lifts, 12 of which are high-speed quad chairs, and three lodges, two at the base and one at mid-mountain, to create a luxurious mountain experience. Overall, the terrain of the mountain is moderate, with long flowy groomed trails, phenomenal tree runs and powder stashes. It won’t matter what level you’re at, everyone is bound to find their jam and have a great time! Maybe you’re not into skiing alpine terrain? No problem at all! Mt Bachelor Ski Resort also has amazing cross-country trails ranging from beginner to expert tracks to spend your day exploring.

Local tip: After a recent mountain storm, the town of Bend took a “sick day” to head up to the mountain. Given the one lane road, when that happens, I recommend getting up before the mountain opens to miss the traffic. You can grab breakfast and a cup of coffee at the West Village Lodge and watch Pine Marten lift prepare to open.

The one thing this mountain is missing is lodging. That is where Meredith Lodging comes in to play. We offer both Mt Bachelor lodging or Bend, OR lodging. Our Mt. Bachelor Village offers luxurious condos and amenities, including access to our exclusive Meredith Lodging clubhouse, hot tubs and so much more. We also have homes, not a part of the Village, that are halfway to the mountain if you plan to spend all your time on the snow, or closer to Bend if you want to mix in the amenities of town. Call our local agents in Central Oregon for their expertise to help find you the perfect home for your family this winter!
